“I raise my eyes toward the mountains. From where will my help come?” Psalm 121:1, NAB
Thought I’d try something a little bit different. So I’m taking on this whole Psalm verse by verse. Are you ready? This Psalm is a blessing given to someone embarking on a dangerous journey. People look anxiously at the wooded hills or mountains, dark forests and valleys and the vast ocean or turbulent sky. The question is…will God protect us on our journey?
When we raise our eyes to the formidable, we may wonder what or who we can trust. It gets pretty scary at night in the hills. Strange noises, the cold and damp and wild animals are lurking…scaring us out of our wits. It would be very tempting to trust our own ingenuity. But fear has a tendency of overpowering us and our ingenuity. Whether it’s hiking into the woods, climbing hills and mountains, flying or sailing it can get scary and it can happen very fast.
Life can be like that, formidable. We’re constantly raising our eyes…wondering. Where can we get help at a moment’s notice? From where will it come? Will God be with us? Will our close friends and family help us or will they outrun us trying to save themselves? Will we be left stranded? From “where” will our help come?
One of the gifts of the Holy Spirit is fortitude or courage; a gift to strengthen our souls in times of trouble and temptations, and give us confidence in God. Tune in next week at the same Beacon time and the same Beacon channel for more of this Psalm.
Until next time…have courage...luv ya!
